Teacher of the Year at VJJHS
The award for teacher of the year, for the 2011 – 2012 school season, comes from the science department. Diligent in her duties, professional in her work, enthusiastic with her students, and a pleasure to be around is none other than this year’s honored teacher, Ms. S. Chambliss. Congratulations to Ms. Chambliss for a job well done in bringing Vernon Johns Junior High School one step closer to becoming fully accredited, as we together as a VJJHS family are stepping into greatness.

A hovercraft is also called an air-cushioned-vehicle or ACV for short. They are used in many different types of terrain as well as used by many different types of groups. The military uses them in tactical operations and fun-goers use them for racing & traveling purposes. What is the category for a transportation ACV?
It floats in the air, it moves over the ground, and can navigate through waterways. Let’s just say that an ACV is all of the above. Below are pictures
of students experimenting with the making of a small CD hovercraft.

HERE COMES THE JUDGE
HERE COMES THE JUDGE
On March 18, 2012, the Vernon Johns Jaguars were invited to visit the US Circuit Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Our host was the Honorable Judge Roger Gregory. Twenty-five enthusiastic teenagers from the 8th and 9th grade, visited the State capitol, eagerly awaiting the opportunity to meet the first and only black US Court of Appeals Judge. These aspiring students are
gifted, talented, motivated and are hard wired to be the leaders of tomorrow. We thank the Honorable Judge Gregory for the opportunity to have an audience with him as Principal Dr. Ronnie Watson and the Jaguars of Vernon Johns Junior High continues to step into greatness. Below are some pictures of the Honorable Judge and possibly some of our future historical trend setters as well.

What makes a “teacher” a teacher? Teachers have to have some basic values to be productive. One of the most important aspect in teaching is the concept of teachers giving to the student. But teaching is much more than giving knowledge and homework. Teaching is knowing when to let the student go and to become independent. Teaching is being sincere when correcting or praising a child. Teaching provides a young person a safe and secure environment while being a fair and reasonable steward of the classroom. A teacher must possess a sense of humor about the student as well as themselves. Teachers must be part of the community. Teachers must respect the students but have rules set for the students welfare. Overall, a teacher must be well….. human. Thank you teacher for you being you.

Education First (EF), The World Leader in Education, has recently contacted Ms. Christine Allegue (VJ French Teacher who entered the EF contest) to inform her that VJJHS has won an award of 10,000 dollars for Vernon Johns’ students to travel to Paris, France. Consequently, on Thursday May 3, 2012, EF will visit VJJHS in order to give details, dates, and timelines of the proposed trip during our regularly scheduled PTSA meeting. The goal of this initiative is to increase parental involvement and offer students an opportunity to learn about the geography, foreign language, and the French culture. Be part of the excitement that is surrounding the Junior High School in all that it is doing academically and socially. To learn more, come join us to discuss and to explore the nation that gave the United States democracy, liberty, and the Statue of Liberty. Principal Dr. Ronnie Watson is leading the way for Vernon Johns Junior High School, as it is stepping into greatness with the help of the community & parents. Where do some people acquire their determination to succeed? For some it’s innate. For others it is learned. For most people, we have to find it. Sometimes it’s that untouchable quality of persistence, motivation, or the will to go forward that drives us to be more than we think that we can become. Athletics have always been a crucial and fun part of American schools and society. Vernon Johns High School wants to recognize all of its athletes, and is here to support them as the energy & verve needed to flourish and grow into young adulthood is refined and preserved . Below are some pictures of VJJHS Jaguars showing strength of character.

Creativity, imagination, hard work ethic, and responsibility are words that come to mind when I think about Justin Deloach, Trevon Monroe , and Dylan Lenig. The three amigos have been working on a collaborative project with the Petersburg Police Department and Vernon Johns Junior High School. The REACH program has really affected the students in the technology department. The students truly are more Responsible, they Excel in their work, they Aspire to become more, they have more Compassion for others around them, and they are more Honest about their future and how to get to where they want to be in life. Below are some pictures of their efforts in developing the annex counseling building on 901 Halifax Rd. Petersburg, Virginia, 23805. Thank you gentleman for taking the REACH concept to a whole new level.

What makes someone decide to go into the business of cleaning septic tanks, trash removal, or even placing oneself in harms- way by becoming a police officer. They all have obvious things about them that would cause most people to shy away from that field of expertise. But do you realize the importance of those jobs and the people who perform them? Every person has value and a place in this big globe of ours. Vernon Johns Junior High School is reaching out to the young students in the community and letting them explore the possibilities of their own future job placement by having a college and career awareness fair. Below are some pictures of the career fair presenters, Mrs. Florence Farley, Mr. Lorne Joseph, and Ms. Sherrilynn Stevens, as well as representatives from local areas of work such as bankers, educators, lawyers, and city treasurer office. We believe our cubs can and will become something very special in the future.

Surveying is defined as the science and technique of determining the relative positions of points and or objects on, above or below the surface of the earth. In addition to this, Land Surveying involves the research of land records, the research and analyzation of prior surveys, maps and historical evidence in order to accurately determine land boundaries and subdivide larger tracts of land into smaller parcels for potential development.

The Earth’s magnetic pole moves an average of 6.2 miles per year. Using little more than a compass and a 66-foot chain, early American surveyors set out early to chart the United States of America. With all of these factors involved, it’s all in the details. Mr. Kings’ technology students have taken the challenge to map out their future and the rest of the world by practicing surveying concepts in their studies of construction technology. Below are some pictures of our future surveyors.

How would you like to have some more money? How would you like to have $350.00 more money to be exact? One way that you could gain that amount of money, as a student at VJJHS, is to participate in school-wide competitions. T ‘Asia Robinson is one such student that recognizes the value in participation and student involvement. The Veterans of Foreign Wars chapter from Petersburg, recognized T’Asia with a check made out to her for the sum of 300 dollars. She already won a $50.00 check one month ago. The VFW offered all students the opportunity to participate in a writing contest on “Patriotism, what does it mean to you”. T’Asia won the contest, the right to move on to the district, state, and national level , as well as $350.00 dollars. Who says it doesn’t pay to be an involved student. T’Asia is cultivating her money tree by participating in school contest as she is smiling all the way to the bank.

Logo recognition is one of the most important aspects for any company. Whether it is the red, white, and blue wave of the Pepsi Cola Trade Mark or the phrase from that lovable wascaly wabbit Bugs Bunny, “What’s up doc? To recognize any establishment through phrase or logo is priceless. Students of VJJHS have been working on the image of the school through solid academic work, proper school attendance, suitable behavior, and passing their SOL test. The teachers and community are delighted with the efforts put forth by students. Some students have decided that they would like to take another step forth in enhancing the image of the school by designing a new school logo. Below are several examples of the school logo made in Mr. Kings’ Technology foundations class.

Communications Technology plays a large part of how the world works. Whether it is using the newest cell phone, computer software, or the latest i-Pod, we use communications technology constantly. We are living in the Information Age and it shows in our ever expanding global society. Students at Vernon Johns Junior High School are part of that extending community and have immersed themselves in technology. Students that are part of the Technology Department have been applying themselves rigorously in the many ways to communicate. Below are some pictures of Jaguar students learning areas such as Morse Code, webpage development through HTML, phonetic alphabet, computer software through Microsoft WORD, and t- shirt design.

The Virginia Standards of Learning is on everyone’s mind, especially the students. High school students are challenged to a higher degree more than ever before. Students are expected to be academically accelerated, spectacular athletes, world class citizens, and top model performers. School is much more arduous and serious than years previous. The students at Vernon Johns Junior High School are working hard to meet all the expectations that are placed on them as young adults. Sometimes competition can bring out the best in people. The students have been asked to relax and use the power of competition to motivate themselves to reach a higher plateau. The REACH program allows for such an extension of ones’ ability. Our VJJHS ninth grade cubs are leading the eighth grade Jaguar pack into greatness through a little bit of competition. They want to pave the way for success academically through a friendly competitive game of basketball. Below are some pictures of the "REACH for Competition from Within" basketball game.

It is well known that the best of America is shown through its compassion, liberties, work ethic , and its moral character. All of these attributes can be found on a daily basis throughout the fruited plains. Standing for what is right and true, being a beacon of hope, and freedom for all are some of the pillars of our great nation. Sometimes a helping hand is all that is needed. The Technology Department at Vernon Johns Junior High School is lending a helping hand to the Petersburg Police Department. Several students are aiding in the actual renovation design of Petersburg’s newest counseling annex building. The students will design the building in a 3-dimensional fashion completed with renovations shown in a before & after walk-through. The partnership will foster a collaboration between the school, the police, and the community at large. America is a great place to live, work, and to grow. Let the American spirit live through its willingness and ability to lending a helping hand. Thank you America for being a great friend indeed

“You could hear the praise, joy, and clapping as you passed by Vernon Johns Junior High School”, one person said. A student stated, “It was a great feeling to witness and to experience the staff believing in me and my fellow students. All the teachers gathered around the entrance way to the school and cheered the students as the entered the building." The motivational exercise was a way to show the students that the staff is behind all the efforts to fully accredite VJJHS. Students, parents, teachers, and the community have never been more proud of the students for their efforts to pass this year’s SOL test.

"REACH" makes it a RED TAILS event.

Formally, they formed the332nd fighter group and the 477th bombardment group of the U.S Army Air Corps. The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African American military aviators in the United States armed forces. Many citizens in the United States and people around the world are somewhat illiterate. Some people squander the opportunities on how to read and practice reading, while others unfortunately would relish the opportunity to learn and to partake in the knowledge of being literate, but never get the chance to do so accordingly. Reading truly is fundamental and it changes lives. We want to respectfully honor the students who have passed their writing portion of the English SOL test and to continue to encourage all people to find the value and importance in reading & writing.
